Widney Manor

Note: This map shows the position of Widney Manor - the house that is. Presumably the Landing Ground was nearby? If anybody can kindly offer advice on this, it will be most welcome.

WIDNEY MANOR: Military Landing Ground

Military user: RFC  (Royal Flying Corps)

38 [Home Defence] Sqdn   (Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2c & F.E.2b types)

54 [Home Defence] Sqdn   (Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2c & Avro 504 types)

Location: S or SE of the M42, about 1nm W of Knowle, just NW of Bentley Heath

Period of operation: 1916

NOTES: It appears this site was used as a night Landing Ground for perhaps just two months. Now situated in the WEST MIDLANDS.

I am in a bit of a quandry here. 54 Squadron were formed at CASTLE BROMWICH in May 1916, and 38 Squadron in July 1916. If it is correct that this Landing Ground only operated for about two months, then clearly I have no idea exactly which types were flown from this site.

It could be that only the B.E.2 type was used, but of course, it could that all four types were seen flying. If anybody could offer advice on this subject, this will be much appreciated. I do appreciate that such details are a tad 'anoraky', but, I always try to make the 'Guide' as accurate as possible.
