Wimbledon Common

WIMBLEDON COMMON: Model flying venue, later military Landing Ground

Military users: Royal Flying Corps/Royal Air Force

39 [Home Defence] Sqdn   (Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2, B.E.12 & S.E.5. Later in 1917 Bristol F.2 Fighters)

141 [Home Defence] Sqdn  (A variety of types it seems - perhaps oddly no details seem available)

Location: W of A219, NW of Wimbledon ‘old town’ centre, in SE sector of the Common

Period of operation: 1915 to 1918

Site area: 40 acres   549 x 320

NOTES: It now appears that in 1914 and for some years before this area was used by model Aero Clubs.

Situated on ‘common land' it appears this military Landing Ground was for night use only.
