Wimborne Minster

WIMBORNE MINSTER see also CANFORD VILLAGE

WIMBORNE MINSTER: Military airstrip/airfield

Military user: US First Army ‘VII’ Corps 980th and 981st Field Artillery Battalions and ‘XIX’ Corps, 228th Field Artillery Group

Location: Airstrip site not known? Wimborne Minster 4nm N of Poole town centre, 7nm NW of Bournemouth town centre

Period of operation: 1944/5 only?

NOTES: It appears that six Piper L-4 Grasshoppers were based here. It would seem probable that this site was in the grounds of the stately home at Kingston Lacy, just S of the B3082 and about 2.5nm SW of Wimborne Minster town centre.

A major US Army hospital was built here prior to the D-Day landings to help cope with casualties. After WW2 virtually all traces were removed.
