Wispers
WISPERS: Private Landing Ground
Operated by: Her Grace, The Duchess of Bedford, Woburn Abbey
Location: 3m NW town, (Midhurst), adj Woodgate Farm, 1.5m NW Woolbeding
Period of operation: Roughly 1931 until 1937
Runway(s): Max landing run: 485 grass (Another source claims 503)
Note: As the local area picture below shows, (giving the longest landing run), this field was ideal for landing and taking-off into wind in any direction, highly desirable if flying a de Havilland DH60 Moth.
A GALLERY
In May 2022 I was kindly contacted by Mr Adrian Hearle. He owns the hangar built by the Duchess and is very keen to preserve it, converting the interior into his home, together with as much information he can find regarding its history. All the items below were provided by Adrian, together with two items from Google Earth ©, and an area view from my Google Earth © derived database.
NOTES: Listed in the 1930s ‘A.A. Register of Landing Grounds’
As is well known the Duchess of Bedford was very keen on aviation and eventually learnt to fly herself. See WOBURN (BEDFORDSHIRE) for the fuller story.
