Woodscombe Farm
WOODSCOMBE FARM: Private airstrip
Note: Apart from the three great views from a drone, found on the Seddons Estate Agents web site, all the other pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©
Location: Just S of Nomansland on the B3137, 7nm W of Tiverton
Period of operation: Circa 2010 to 2019?
Runway(s): 18/36 300 grass
Note: The first 2010 picture above appears to show clear evidence that a 09/27 runway, 510 metres long, was in the process of being laid out? However, the 2011 picture, which clearly shows the 18/36 runway, appears to spread doubt on the subject.
NOTES: If I may crave your indulgence, there is a bit of a story here. To begin with, and firmly believing that, as they say - a picture is worth a thousand words - when informed that this airstrip existed, I immediately started looking around on Google Earth. And found nothing. (This was in August 2020).
So, back to Google to see if anything was listed for WOODSCOMBE FARM. Heh presto, there it was advertised for sale, by Seddons Estate Agents, and, very much to my delight with pictures showing the airstrip and hangar - and with a classic DH82A Tiger Moth in view. So, back to Google Earth using the postcode. Guess what? Still nothing. How on earth could this be? It made no sense.
I then had the bright idea of contacting my very I.T. savvy nephew Lewis Greaves to see what he could make of it. Lo and behold, in next to no time he sent me the second picture - site identified and runway marked. Not all of the runway admittedly, but more than enough to go ahead with.
Now armed with this information, the rest fell into place. Clearly the pictures from a drone had been taken some time before 2020. This site is very interesting in some respects. Unusually for most airstrips in Devon, this one was quite short lived. And of course, it had that second 09/27 runway, seeming to be laid out, but not used - or perhaps only briefly?
Also, I am of course assuming the estate agents used a drone? Could have been a helicopter of course, a drone being a fraction of the price so much more likely?
As always in this 'Guide' if anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be most welcome.
