Woolwich

Note: This map only gives the position of Woolwich within the UK. If anybody today knows the exact location of this venue or these venues, this advice will be much appreciated.

WOOLWICH: Temporary aerodrome

NOTES: It appears that during Easter 1928 the Cornwall Aviation Company were operating from a site in Woolwich, and with three machines (Avro 504Ks) carried a record number of 2,000 passengers over four days. Their Avro 504Ks could carry just two passengers so some simple arithmetic indicates that they conducted 166 flights each day.Which is clearly a nonsense? Or is it?

WOOLWICH is also listed as being a venue on the 15th October 1932 for Sir Alan Cobham’s National Aviation Day UK Display Tour.

Some years ago I made this comment: "A significant event I’d suppose for local people? But just try to establish today exactly where this event took place? Perhaps WOOLWICH COMMON where Cody undertook kite trials in 1903?"

AN ANSWER PROVIDED

In October 2021 I was very kindly contacted by Mr Cliff Blake. He tells us that he clearly remembers being taken, as a three year old, in a wheelchair, to see this display. He gave me quite a graphic account of his impressions of the event. Didn't like the blaring PA system or the smell of the aviation fuel for example. But he does remember where the event took place, in the corner of Woolwich Common bounded by Shooters Hill Road and Academy Road.
