Workington flying sites

Note: This map only shows the position of Workington within the UK. If anybody with knowledge of these three sites could kindly add more information - and a picture or two would be brilliant - this will be very welcome.

        WORKINGTON see also LONSDALE PARK

         WORKINGTON: Temporary aerodrome

Operated by: The Berkshire Aviation Co

Location: Junction of Rating Lane and Croslands Park Road

Period of operation: 20th February to 1st March 1920

NOTES: 261 passengers were flown during this visits. It should also be remembered, and probably not too many people know this, that during the 1920s and 30s, the Air Ministry insisted that all sites used by the 'flying circus' operators had to be inspected and certified as official aerodromes - even if used for just one day.

And indeed, the Ministry inspectors often placed limitations on the operators. Later on, (perhaps by the mid 30s?), the more respected operators became self-certifying. However, I do not know when this regime of regulation started - or if it applied here in 1920.

WORKINGTON: Civil aerodrome

NOTES: According to the August 1927 edition of Flight magazine, the 'aerodrome' was situated 1.5nm E of Workington.

On the 24th and 25th of June 1933 the No.1 Tour of Sir Alan Cobham’s National Aviation Day events throughout the UK visited and displayed in/near Workington. But - did they use this site or another location?

WORKINGTON: Private airstrip

Operated by: British Steel Corporation

Location: Near the intersection of the A595 and A596, about 2.5nm SE of Workington town centre

NOTES: Listed in a publication produced in roughly 1975
