Operated by: Isle of Purbeck Light Aeroplane Club

Location: Just W of Worth Matravers village and roughly 4nm WSW of Swanage town centre

Period of operation: 1928 to, at latest, 1939?

NOTES: It appears that Lieutentant-Colonel Louis Strange founded both this airfield and the Isle of Purbeck Light Aeroplane Club, opening on the 16th August 1928. It appears it was a very active club, operating a Simmonds Spartan, and, in 1928 having a membership of 128, including pilots, observers and associates.

But, there is a problem here. To date, (May 2024) the only Simmonds Spartan found, registered to this Club is G-EBYU, and this was only operated by this Club from August to October 1928. So, clearly, they must have been operating another aircraft. If anybody can kindly offer advice and information, this will be much appreciated.

This location is not to be confused with the nearby WORTH MATRAVERS airfield used by the CHRISTCHURCH based Special Duties Flight in 1940, engaged on towing gliders for radar trials using, can you believe (?), Avro 504Ns. A type dating back to WW1.
