Worth Matravers
WORTH MATRAVERS: Military airfield
Note: Both of these pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©
I have the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust to thank for pinpointing this location
Military user: Apparently used by SD Flight based at CHRISTCHURCH
Location: Just SW of Worth Matravers, about 4nm WSW of Swanage town centre
Period of operation: At some time during WW2?
NOTES: A ‘SD’ Flight was a 'Special Duties' Flight, but does anybody know what these were? As the village is at the eastern edge of an area used as an Army Gunnery Range, is it safe to assume that the activities were associated; such as target towing and/or range spotting?
One aspect, see the CHRISTCHURCH listing, is that without too much doubt this airfield was used, in the early stages of WW2, by Avro 504s of WW1 design, to help in radar plotting duties.
Also, this was not the WORTH aerodrome. See seperate listing.
