Note:  Both of these pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©

Note: The nearby village is, it appears, spelt Apuldrum today. Gone posh then, I expect.

Military users: RAF Fighter Command            11 Group

175, 181 and 182 Sqdns    (Hawker Typhoons)

302, 308 & 317 (Polish) Sqdns   (Vickers-Supermarine Spitfires)

Other sources say there were Czech pilots from 310, 312 and 313 Squadrons stationed here. Flying Spitfires

Location: Just E of the Chichester Channel, S of Appledram village, and roughly 1nm SW of Chichester

Period of operation: 1943 to 1944

Runways: 05/23   1463   grass         14/32   1280   grass

NOTES: The runway surfaces were actually semi-hard with ‘Somerfield Track’ steel matting which allowed the grass to grow through.

Good afternoon (almost!). My name is Mike Bennett and I am the editor of a twice-yearly magazine called Talking Tangmere. I am also a visitor guide at Tangmere. I should like to use a picture of Apuldram airfield in our next issue, due out in April. Thank you

Hi Mike, I'm confused. I don't have a picture of Appledram - unless you mean the map? In which case - by all means. I'll now see if I can get a Google Earth picture. Regards, Dick

Hi, I visited Appldram in the early 90s.Is the small museum still there and Typhoon with DDay markings? and also Clark Gable's USAAF uniform (hopefully minus the moths that were feeding on it)

We'd love to hear from you, so please scroll down to leave a comment!
