Appledram
APPLEDRAM: Military airfield (Advanced Landing Ground)
Note: Both of these pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©
Note: The nearby village is, it appears, spelt Apuldrum today. Gone posh then, I expect.
Military users: RAF Fighter Command 11 Group
175, 181 and 182 Sqdns (Hawker Typhoons)
302, 308 & 317 (Polish) Sqdns (Vickers-Supermarine Spitfires)
Other sources say there were Czech pilots from 310, 312 and 313 Squadrons stationed here. Flying Spitfires
Location: Just E of the Chichester Channel, S of Appledram village, and roughly 1nm SW of Chichester
Period of operation: 1943 to 1944
Runways: 05/23 1463 grass 14/32 1280 grass
NOTES: The runway surfaces were actually semi-hard with ‘Somerfield Track’ steel matting which allowed the grass to grow through.

We'd love to hear from you, so please scroll down to leave a comment!
