Ashley Walk

Note: This map only gives a general position within the UK. If anybody can kindly provide a more exact location, and/or, advice on what has happened here, this will be most welcome.

ASHLEY WALK: Military airstrip

Location: 4nm NE of Fordingbridge

Runways: Two x 366 grass strips (Orientation?)

NOTES: This was in/near a RAF bombing range in WW2 and possibly relates to the FORDINGBRIDGE listing?

We seem to see and hear from WW2 fighter and bomber pilots and aircrew, bless them, but why almost nothing from those flying liaison and transport aircraft etc? Today of course, their wartime exploits are equally fascinating.

Ashley Walk bombing range in the New Forest was where Tallboy and Grand Slam bombs were tested. There was a large circular concrete 'target' there and I believe what remains of this can be seen about a mile east of your marker. About a mile south of the concrete circle you can see what appears 2 crossed runways (hard surface not grass) which may be about 2000ft long each and bomb craters and aiming 'crosses' litter the area.

We'd love to hear from you, so please scroll down to leave a comment!
