A Guide to the history of British flying sites within the United Kingdom
get in touch

Aylestone Road

Note: From doing a bit of research, I do now reckon this map shows the probable site. However, if anybody can kindly confirm this is actually the correct location, this advice will be much appreciated.

AYLESTONE ROAD: Temporary flying ground

Location: County Cricket Ground, Aylestone Road just S to SSW of Leicester

Period of operation: 30th November 1912

NOTES: Gustav Hamel took off from here to undertake the first ever British newspaper delivery flight. He flew his ‘cargo’ to Loughborough. This wasn't of course the first 'air cargo' flight in the UK.
