Bergholt Road

BERGHOLT ROAD:   Temporary Landing Ground

During his Daily Mail sponsored tour of mainly England and South Wales, (ending up in Ireland), Henri Salmet visited Colchester. It appears he arrived on the 1st August, flying across from Northampton and then gave displays. He was it seems, also here on the 2nd August but did not fly. Possibly due to poor weather and/or high winds, or perhaps simply needing a rest having recently undergone major surgery? He then departed for Southend on the 3rd August.

Location:  The venue was just north of the Bergholt Road, just north-west of Colchester town centre

NOTES: This Tour by Henri Salmet on 1912 was a first in the U.K. in that the Daily Mail had sponsored a foreign aviator to promote aviation. It was very successful too. They had of course also sponsored Claude Grahame-White to do a similar Tour in 1912, under the emblem of 'Wake Up England'.
