Cardurnock
CARDURNOCK: Military Diversion/Emergency Landing Ground.
(Officially known as the SOLWAY HOUSE Day Landing Ground)
Note: In WW2 RN (Fleet Air Arm) ANTHORN
Military user: Western Command (So is that the RFC or RNAS or both?)
Period of operation: 1917 to 1918
Location: Close to where the later RN Fleet Air Arm station ANTHORN is situated but not exactly the same site in area
NOTES: The Landing Ground, or “alighting” area as it was sometimes called in those days, was encircled by a shallow ditch filled with lime to render it more visible. Established for aircraft in transit to and from Western Scotland. In WW2 Solway House became the residence for the Commanding Officer of RNAS ANTHORN.
