Chapel Farm
CHAPEL FARM: Private airstrip (Aka SANDFORD)
Note: The first three pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©. The area view is from my Google Earth © derived database.
Location: S of the B7086, about 0.5nm SE of Sandford village and roughly 1.75nm SE of Strathaven town centre
Period of operation: Unknown? Possibly from 1990s (?) to -
Runway: 01/19 200 grass
NOTES: We have Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for pointing out this location. He also tells us that a Cassutt Racer was once based here.
I found this hard to believe, but, as Graham is very well informed, I decided to find out about this - not as easy as I had expected. Much to my surprise, the only figures I could find indicated a take-off roll of 183 metres and a landing roll of 160 metres. So, very tight, but achievable - and - note the gap in the trees at the southern end of the runway.
Clearly, other factors can improve these bare figures for such a small and light aircraft. The weight of the pilot and fuel load. Plus of course a brisk breeze from the south. Another important factor is temperature, and this part of the world is known to have much lower temperatures than we in the south enjoy. I can clearly remember cases when flying when very low temperatures considerably improved overall performance.
