As is so often the case, I have to thank the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust web-site for helping to pin-point this location.

Military user: RAF  (Royal Air Force)

No.22  Marine Operational Group

Location: NE of Ellingham, 3.5nm SSW of Seahouses, 8nm N of Alnwick

Period of operation: 1918 to 1919

NOTES: Sub-station to EAST FORTUNE for non-rigid airships.

Today it is, I think, a largely forgotten aspect of WW1. But in fact it now appears that the sorties performed by non-rigid airships was far more significant than previously thought, including the opinions of those flying them, who by and large felt they were performing a thankless task.

In more recent years accounts by German U-boat captains shows they had quite a considerable deterrent effect, as, being equipped with bombs, if an airship was spotted it forced them to submerge, and stay hidden for quite a long period. Needless to say of course, the hapless airship crews would have been quite unaware of this result.
