Cove
Note: This map only gives the position of Cove within the UK. If anybody can kindly offer more advice about this venue, this will be most welcome.
COVE: Temporary aerodrome (Same site as WHITEHALL FARM used in 1935?)
Operated by: Sir Alan Cobham’s 1934 Tour of the UK
Location: 2nm NW of Farnborough town centre
Period of operation: 30th June 1934
NOTES: Looked at in recent years, it must seem astonishing that an event like this could take place so close to FARNBOROUGH airfield. But it needs to be remembered that in the 1930s there was very little in the way of restricted airspace throughout the UK. Regarding civilian airspace restrictions CROYDON airport was, I believe, the first. But even then permission to enter with non-radio equipped aircraft could be requested.
As it still can be today virtually anywhere - which is not to say a request will be granted. But, from what I have heard, ATC in the UK can often be very obliging if operating conditions allow. And quite probably, if ATC are satisfied with the pilots proficiency to navigate and comply with time restrictions.
