(Landing Ground for the Invergordon Naval Base)

Location: S of the A9, about 5nm NNE to NE of Alness and 4.5nm NW of Cromarty on the other side of the Cromaty Firth

Period of operation: 1917 to 1921 (?)

NOTES:  SOMETHING TO PONDER?
It appears that the actual date that this site ceased to be used is open to question.  1918 or 1921 seems to be normal opinion. However, Mike Holder who is a great friend of this 'Guide', has unearthed this article from The Scotsman published on Wednesday the 20th November 1935:

                                             SCOTS AIR SMASH
                                 ____ ♦ _____

                               R.A.F. 'Plane Crashes in Ross-shire
                                        _________
                                    PILOT INJURED

"A ROYAL AIR FORCE 'plane on a practice flight from Novar Base, Ross-shire, yesterday crashed at Delny, about three miles north-east of Invergordon, when the pilot was attempting to land on a farm field used by the Air Force as a practice landing ground."

It appears the pilot, Sub-Lieut. Easson, R.N., flying solo was removed unconcious from the wreckage, received medical attention at Delny House before being sent to Inverness Infirmary. Hopefully making a full recovery?

GENERAL NOTES
Used it seems by ships’ aeroplanes disembarked in the Cromarty Firth. But, did the military actually take over DELNEY HOUSE or did the owners freely offer their grounds to assist the war effort?

I have come across several examples of the British aristocracy, even the Royal Family, loaning out parts of their estates to provide airfields but I very much doubt the Government of the day requisitioned these sites in the way they commandeered privately owned farms etc. Can anybody offer advice on this subject?

In more recent years Delny House has become the Delny House Hotel.
