EDINBURGH: Early aerodrome?
NOTES: In 1910 a Mr W Foulis is mentioned as being operating a Wright biplane from Edinburgh. Is anything now known as to where he was operating from? And for how long?
EDINBURGH. Temporary aerodrome
NOTES: Edinburgh was the 32nd venue for the 1929 Sir Alan Cobham's Municipal Aerodrome Campaign. Starting in May it ended in October with one hundred and seven towns and cities visited. Mostly in England two venues were in Wales and eight in Scotland.
Edinburgh was the fourth venue in Scotland, GLASGOW, STIRLING and PERTH being visited before. He then went on to LANARK, DUMFRIES, STRANREAR and AYR. As far as I can make out, the venue location in EDINBURGH isn't known? If anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be much appreciated.
The aircraft Cobham used was the DH61 'Giant Moth' G-AAEV, named 'Youth of Britain'. The schedule he set himself seems incredible today. Day after day, with barely a break, he would fly to a new location, treat the 'worthies' to a flight, (or flights), attend a slap-up civic luncheon to extol the virtues of having an aerodrome/regional airport. He would also fly children sponsored by Lord Wakefield, and finally conduct paying joy-rides until dusk. The idea being that the revenue from the latter being enough to cover the costs of the 'Tour'.
