Flookburgh

FLOOKBURGH: Airship assembly shed and flight test centre
(Also once known as FLOOKBURGH MODEL AERO VILLAGE, later FLOOKBURGH WEST and much later called RAVENSTOWN?)
Operated by: Vickers
Location: Near to Flookburgh village, on the Cartmel peninsular 10nm ENE of Barrow-in-Furness
Period of operation: 1916 to 1917?
NOTES: Could it be that this later become CARK aerodrome? It is very tempting to think so, as CARK is also referred to as FLOOKBURGH. However, experience has taught me to now be wary of making such simplistic assumptions. If anybody can kindly offer asvice, this will be most welcome.
Did this site ever see any flying activity? It appears that this site was under construction to a large degree before being abandoned in September 1917. The original idea was that WALNEY ISLAND was too vulnerable to U-boat attack so Vickers needed a more secure site to build their airships. It seems that the dual factors of steel shortages and cost led to the cancellation of the project - £800,000 was wasted it seems! About £63,680,000 converted to 2017.
