Galewood Farm
GALEWOOD FARM: Gliding site (see also MILFIELD)
Operated by: 1980s: Borders Gliding Club
Location: Alongside the A697, 0.5nm SE of Milfield, 4nm NW of Wooler
Period of operation: 1980s only?
Runway: 09/27 grass
NOTES: Many years ago I made these notes: At first I assumed this site was obviously on the disused WW2 MILFIELD aerodrome as the location seems to be almost exactly the same. However two points have now made me question this. Firstly an airfield guide published in the 1980s makes no mention of this site being on a disused aerodrome although it did make a point of doing this for other entries where applicable. Secondly I found a record of the runway being 09/27 grass and these do not correspond to any of the runway headings at MILFIELD.
The majority of gliding clubs operating from disused WW2 aerodromes do tend to use either the remaining operable sections of the old hard runways or parallel grass strips. This said I wouldn’t be at all surprised to learn that GALEWOOD FARM occupies part of the old WW2 aerodrome.
In July 2016 when I came to add this entry this entry to the 'Guide' I Googled up Borders Gliding Club, and lo and behold the address was Milfield aerodrome. And this is what the Google map shows. However, this certainly does not prove that both sites are identical. If anybody could be kind enough to help clear this up, such advice will be most welcome.
