A MICHAEL T HOLDER GALLERY
We have Mike Holder, a great friend of this 'Guide', to thank for investigating this venue which was previously just a few short notes relating to Sir Alan Cobham's visit in 1932.
The short article was published in the Hull Daily Mail on the 4th March 1921. The Notice of the land for sale was published in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph on the 2nd October 1925.
This second short article was published in the Leeds Mercury on the 12th July 1932. The article regarding a possible airport location was published in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph on the 14th July 1932.
This last article concerns a loaded RAF bomber coming down on this site in 1944, and was published in the Hull Daily Mail on the 10th April 1944.
NOTES: Sir Alan Cobham was tad late in getting involved with the 'Flying Circus' enterprises in the early 1930s. But, once he got his teeth into it, he blew the socks of everybody else involved. Incidentally, he detested the term 'Flying Circus'. So, how ironic that these days history recognises him as being the main personality for this era.
The Tour assembly point was HANWORTH AERODROME, in south west London, on the 12th April 1932. One hundred and seventy four venues were planned to be visited, ending at CHINGFORD, north London, on the 16th October. Incredibly it appears that this Tour did actually appear at all the venues, or certainly the majority of them, and on time. GOOLE was the 80th venue.
