Heigham Holmes

Note: This map only shows my rough estimate of a location for this Landing Ground.

HEIGHAM HOLMES: Military ‘secret’ Landing Ground

Military user: RAF Lysanders on clandestine operations

Period of operation: 1940 to 1944

NOTES:  The main base for Special Operations Executive  Lysanders was TEMPSFORD (BEDFORDSHIRE)  and the majority of operations took place from TANGMERE (SUSSEX). However, I have found a couple of scant records of other locations - including this one.

A bit of research indicates that no proof has been found of an airfield here. Which is pretty much what I would expect - just a suitable field. Rather like the fields used, mostly in France. The fact that mentions seem to crop up very occassionally, seems to add some credibility? And, lets face it, if a super-secret site was required for exceptionally sensitive operations, this would be hard to beat anywhere in England.

If anybody can kindly offer advice on this subject, this will be most welcome.

Don't bother researching for anything to do with an airfield at Heigham Holmes - its mention was wrongly concocted some years ago to include in the booklet on Norfolk and Suffolk airfields, published by the Norfolk and Suffolk Air Museum.
