Helperby

Note: This map gives only a general idea of the location. If anybody can provide a more exact position, this will be very welcome.

HELPERBY: Military aerodrome (also known as BRAFFERTON)

Military users: RFC/RAF         33 & 76 (Home Defence) Sqdns

Initially a Night Landing Ground in 1916 it soon became a RFC/RAF Flight Station

(33 Sqd flew BE.s, FE.2s and later Bristol F.2Bs)

(76 Sqdn flew BE.2s, BE.12s and later Bristol F.2Bs)

Location: Here the alternative known name seems to help. Helperby is on a minor road about 3nm NE of Boroughbridge just E of the river Swale. Brafferton is just to the N of Helperby so presumably the airfield was sandwiched between these two villages?

Period of operation: 1916 to 1919

Site area: 81 acres      914 x 731

Brafferton & Helperby are contiguous and were during WW1. On google maps go 1000m due west from the T junction in Brafferton. The airfield was on the pale coloured field 400m NE of Broomfield Farm Cottage.
