Hempton Green

HEMPTON GREEN: Temporary landing site/ temporary airfield

Note:  This picture was obtained from Google Earth ©

Location: Hempton village is on the A1065 just SW of Fakenham

NOTES: It is reported that on the 29th June 1916 a RFC (Royal Flying Corps) R.E.7 aircraft, Serial: 2352 landed on HEMPTON GREEN - apparently the pilot had a lady friend in Fakenham. I have recorded a couple more instances around the UK of similar ‘goings on’.

What sets this site apart is the record that an aeroplane piloted by Mr Geoffrey Beck visited Hempton in mid 1924 for joy-riding flights and flew as many as 268 passengers in one day! This is a rather odd occurrence in as much as, despite these details being supplied about this situation - there seems to be no aircraft type or registration. Unless of course, somebody could kindly offer advice.

I have a photo showing a bi-plane amongst a crowd of people probably in the 1920s, saying it was taken in Hempton Green. It says 2952 on the tail fin

Hi Carolyn. A scan of that very rare picture would be much appreciated. If possible as a jpeg please. (File size 500KB or less would be ideal). Best regards, Dick
