Hertford flying sites

Note: This map only gives the location of Hertford town within the UK.

HERTFORD: Military Landing Ground (also known as WARE)

Military users: RFC/RAF  (Royal Flying Corps / Royal Air Force)

39 [Home Defence] Sqdn    (Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2s & B.E.12s. Later S.E.5s and at least one Armstrong-Whitworth F.K.8. In 1917 issued with Bristol F.2 Fighters and in 1918 the Royal Aircraft Factory F.E.2b)

Note: I have no idea if 39 Squadron flew all these types into here, (can anybody offer advice?), but it does seem extraordinary, if correct (?), that the Squadron would have been forced to fly the obsolete F.E.2b in 1918.

Location: Presumably in the area between Hertford and Ware close to the modern A10 route?

Period of operation: 1916 to 1918

NOTES: Apparently used only as a Night Landing Ground and replaced by STANSTED ABBOTTS in 1918

HERTFORD: Temporary aerodrome?

Operated by: Berkshire Aviation Co

Location: Did they use the WW1 Landing Ground site?

Period of operation: June 1921

NOTES: The same question can be asked about a ‘Flying Circus’ venue on the 20th April 1933 when Sir Alan Cobham’s No.2 Tour visited Hertford.

Here again, if anybody can offer more exact information, this advice will be most welcome.
