High Trees

HIGH TREES: Private aerodrome

Operated by: The Earl of Gardigan

Location: On the western edge of Savernake forest just SE of Marlborough

Period of operation: 1930s and 1937 certainly

NOTES: It seems the Earl laid out an aerodrome and built a hangar to house an Avro 504. But from what date?

However from 1937, (to WW2?), much of the test flying and possibly pleasure flying too, of the new Chilton DW.1 design took place here. In fact the hangar, minus the Avro 504K of course, could accommodate all four Chiltons (G-AESV, G-AESZ, G-AFGH and G-AFGI), so by inference all four were possibly based here at some point - the total number built of this type.

Incredibly all four machines survived WW2, being too small to be impressed into military service and were stored here. At least two were still airworthy in the 21st century, with at least one other slowly being restored.
