Lower Chilworth Farm

Note: This map only gives a rough estimate as to the position of this airfield within the UK. If anybody can kindly offer a more exact location, this advice will be most welcome.

LOWER CHILWORTH FARM: Civil Landing Ground    (aka CHILWORTH and WHEATLEY)

Operated by: Mr A B Scribbans, Lower Chilworth Farm

Location: 4nm E of Wheatley, 4.5nm SW of Thame. Just N of A40

Period of operation: 1930s only?

Runway: Max landing run: 503 grass

NOTES: Information source mainly for this site was mainly from the ‘AA Landing Grounds’ publications in the 1930s and the Airfield Research Group list of Civil Aerodromes 1933.

It does seem that this was an AA (Automobile Association) approved Landing Ground and although CHILWORTH doesn’t seem to appear on modern road maps another clue to its location is that “Transport”, in other words a taxi service, was available from Tiddington Garage, and Tiddington village does appear, just S of the A418.

Chilworth airfield was used till at least 1936 when on August 19th a Moth DH.60X G-AAPJ belonging to Aylesbury Airport Ltd crashed and burst into flames killing the pilot and his passenger, Malcolm Morris Freemand and Joseph Donnelly respectively.
