LYMINGTON: Temporary aerodrome?
NOTES: On the 1st May 1933 Sir Alan Cobham’s No.2 Tour displayed in/near Lymington. Did they use the BUCKLAND FARM Landing Ground?

Military users: USAAF 9th Air Force, IX Tactical Air Command, 84th Fighter Wing, 50th Fighter Group
10th, 81st & 313th Fighter Sqdns (Republic P-47 Thunderbolts)
Location: 1nm E of Lymington
Period of operation: 1944 to 1945
Runways: Steel matting E/W 1463 grass N/S 1280 grass
NOTES: According to a Wikipedia listing, the ALG was used by the USAAF to experiment with and hone techniques for establishing temporary airfields in France after the D-Day landings. However, it is claimed that the intial USAAF tests were held at KINGSTON BAGPUIZE airfield in BERKSHIRE.
It appears that in the early 2000s a private airstrip was established on part of this WW2 Landing Ground area, using the old 13/31 runway. See seperate entry for PYLEWELL HOUSE.
LYMINGTON: Private helipad
Operated by: Berthon Boats
Location: In Lymington, situated roughly halfway between the old town centre and the Marina
Period of operation: 1970s to ?
NOTES: A look at this site on Google Earth in 2016 appears to show no evidence of a helipad. If anybody knows more about this site, and its period of operation, this advice will be most welcome.

NOTES: The AAIB Bulletin published in October 2010 gives an account, (EW/G2010/06/17) of a PA-30 attempting to land here when an engine seemed to fail on a flight from Jersey to Southampton.
I strongly suspect this might have been PYLEWELL HOUSE airstrip which has a runway 1150 metres long? Or is there another strip in this area? I suppose the pilot did well to spot the strip to crash land on but it seems a shame he didn’t lower the landing gear or flaps in time.
