Mannings Field

MANNINGS FIELD: Temporary landing site

Period of operation: 20th and 21st of September 1912

Location: In or near Downley, N of High Wycombe

NOTES: It seems that Colonel Samuel Cody was attempting flying from FARNBOROUGH to Cambridge and got lost whilst flying his Cody No: V aeroplane and landed in MANNINGS FIELD. He stayed overnight nearby and was greeted by the Mayor of High Wycombe.

In researching this 'Guide' I have often been surprised by two aspects - both quite opposite. Some locations which I assumed would be easy enough to find, seem to disappear without trace; whereas others continue to echo through many decades. In this case for over a century. I will admit that in putting in MANNINGS FIELD for a Google Search, I fully expected to find that nothing was known. How wrong can you be!

Not only was it listed, the web-site for Downley Dynamos Junior Football Club gives a postcode, and directions to find it. Because they play on it.
