Northallerton flying sites

Note: This map only shows the location of Northallerton town within the UK. If anybody could kindly provide an exact location for either or both of these venues, this advice will most welcome. And, an individual entry made.

NORTHALLERTON:  Temporary aerodrome for 'joy-riding exhibition flights'

It appears that the first pilot to appear at Northallerton was Gustav Hamel who arrived for the Northallerton Festival in 1913. He offered to take up passengers at 5/- a time in a 50hp Blériot which was owned by Miss Trehawk Davis.

NORTHALLERTON: Temporary aerodrome for ‘joy-riding exhibition flights’

Operated by: The Northern Aircraft Co

Location: Exact site unknown?

Period of operation: 31st July 1914

NOTES: It was here that their pilot W R Ding crashed on landing, (after hitting a four foot high fence), at the end of the third flight that day, with the aircraft ending up inverted. Ding suffered a broken nose but his passenger was unhurt! The Handley Page Type G was shipped to HENDON for repairs but whilst this was undergoing WW1 started and it was promptly requisitioned for use by the RNAS. Mr Ding then took over complete charge of the Lakes Flying Company on Lake Windermere, (CUMBERLAND /  CUMBRIA), in 1914.

NOTES: On the 4th July 1935 it appears Sir Alan Cobham’s No.2 Tour displayed in/near Northallerton.
