Oakley Wood
Note: This is only my estimation of where the airfield was, but in general terms it is quite accurate. If anybody could be kind enough to offer a more exact location, this will be most welcome.
OAKLEY WOOD: Temporary aerodrome? Possibly a recognised aerodrome?
Operated by: Air Trips?
Flying Circus venue:
British Hospitals Air Pageant 1933 Tour of the UK, 15th May
1934 Sky Devils Air Circus Tour, 27th April
Location: On/near the A4130 just E of Wallingford
Period of operation: Early 1930s only?
NOTES: It seems that in the 1930s Pauline Gower and Dorothy Spicer based their Spartan Three-seater G-ABKK between OAKLEY WOOD and PENSHURST in KENT which certainly seems to suggest the site was more than just temporary? They formed the first all-woman aviation concern Air Trips running a ‘joy-ride’ and air taxi operation at PENSHURST. In WW2 Pauline Gower became a significant figure in the ATA (Air Transport Auxiliary).
It now appears that they operated here from September 1931 until February 1934, but not all the time. They took part in the Modern Airways (The Crimson Fleet) tour in 1932, and the British Hospitals Air Pageant tour in 1933.
