REDMIRES: Military Landing Ground

Military user: RFC  (Royal Flying Corps)

33 [Home Defence] Sqdn    (Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2 and F.E.2 types)

Location:  Roughly 7nm WSW of Sheffield city centre, in the Peak District

Period of operation: 1916 to 1917

NOTES: This is a question that keeps cropping up in my little mind, and not just here. 33 Squadron used this site as both a Day and Night Landing Ground - but why was it here, apparently in the middle of nowhere from a strategic point of view. What on earth was it meant to be defending? Did the Army have a substantial presence in the area perhaps? But of course, given the proximity, perhaps it was in defence of Sheffield? Except that it seems situated in the wrong direction to prevent an attack by airships or possibly Gotha bombers.

Also, was this located on the previous Redmires racecourse?

Two possible reasons for it's location, The Sheffield City Battalion, (Pals), had it's training camp just below this high ground. This is some of the highest ground around Sheffield, so maybe an advantage in having a head start in terms of altitude?
