Rye flying sites

Note: This map shows only my estimation of where the WW1 airfield was situated.
Could anybody be kind enough to confirm this, and if not, advise a more accurate location?

RYE see also CASTLE WATER

RYE see also SALTS FARM

RYE HARBOUR: Private aerodrome or Flying Ground?

Operated by: Noel Pemberton-Billing only?

Period of operation: 1909 only?

NOTES: It would seem that Mr Pemberton-Billing , (who later formed Supermarine), possibly trying to fly a 1908 Howard-Wright type aircraft, used a site near, (or in, it could have been fitted with floats?), RYE HARBOUR to extend the early trials held at FAMBRIDGE in ESSEX.

RYE: Temporary airfield?

NOTES: Records state that in early 1910 a Mr W O Manning was also operating a Howard-Wright biplane. (Perhaps also on floats?). Presumably from the same site listed above - wherever that was?

RYE: Military Landing Ground

Military users: RFC/RAF

50 & 112 (Home Defence) Sqdns

Location: Just S of the A259, and E of Rye

Period of operation: 1916 to 1919

Site area: 33 acres   137 x 530

NOTES: Apparently used only as a Night Landing Ground.
