Tal-y-Cafn
TAL-Y-CAFN: Gliding site
Note: These two pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©
Operated by: Aberconway Gliding School and in WW2 No.63 Gliding School
Location: Just N of Tal-y-cafn village which is on the A470, roughly 3nm SSE of Conwy (Conway). In the valley just E of the river Conwy (Conway)
Period of operation: Early 1940s (possibly much longer?)
NOTES: In the June 2014 issue of Light Aviation magazine John Beeswax tells of Eddie Doylerush who has, for many years, been investigating the locations of some fifty WW2 crash sites in Snowdonia and who has written several books on the aviation history of the region. But, what took my notice was this: “Eddie was 14 in 1942 when he joined his County School’s Air Cadet Training Corps squadron in Colwyn Bay.” And: “Later, in 1945, Eddie learned to fly on Dagling gliders and went solo at Tal-y-Cafn airfield in a Slingsby Cadet.”
Limited other information can be found on the inter-web.
I had this site listed for many years, but had no idea where it was located. In May 2021 Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide', came to the rescue after finding this account.
