Tinwald Shaws Farm

Note: This map shows only my rough estimate of where this gliding site may have been located. If anybody could be kind enough to offer a more exact position, this advice will be most welcome.

TINWALD SHAWS FARM: Gliding site

Operated by: The Dumfries and District Gliding Club

Location: 4nm NE of Dumfries

Period of operation: Early 1930s only?

NOTES: It appears that they used a B.A.C. II manufactured in Maidstone, Kent. It seems that only flights of around 100 yards or a similar very short distance were accomplished and ended in damage caused by a take-off stall ending in a heavy landing. The glider, it is claimed, was later vandalised by one John Pettigrew, incensed because he’d been unable to attend the event!
