Top Locks
TOP LOCKS: Forced landing ground
Location: Field near TOP LOCKS, Southall
Period of operation: 3rd to 5th July 1911
NOTES: Although not really an airfield I’ve decided to include it because of the interest it generated locally. On the 3rd July a Bristol Biplane piloted by Lieutenant Barrington-Kennett of the Coldstream Guards made an emergency landing here whilst competing in The Standard Flying Race. When he prepared to take-off heading back to Hendon a large crowd gathered to watch. And that’s the point which made me decide to include this location, (as well as several other similar locations), to help us remember today just how many people in those days were so fascinated by aviation they’d spend hours patiently waiting just to watch one single aeroplane hopefully take to the air. This is of course an entirely different kind of waiting experience compared to charter flight passengers today patiently waiting for their aircraft to become airborne!
