Wentworth Woodhouse
WENTWORTH WOODHOUSE: Occasional private landing ground?
Note: This picture was obtained from Google Earth ©
Location: Roughly 0.5nm ESE of Wentworth
Possible landing strips? 11/29 400 grass? 11/29 540 grass?
NOTES: In an ‘Antiques Roadshow’ on BBC1 broadcast in July 2014 a couple of biplanes were fleetingly spotted on the area in front of the house.
The house itself, home of the Fitzwilliam family, is one of the major stately homes and after WW2, under the direction of Manny Shinwell, the grounds right up to the house were made into an open cast coal mine. An act, it is claimed, of deliberate vandalism and “class warfare”. Obviously the mine in front of the house, (at least), has since been filled in.
Just to the W of the house, on the other side of Hague Lane, there is a 890 metre strip. However, I cannot see how the aeroplanes seen on TV could taxy from this strip to the house. But of course maybe it is possible?
On the Google Earth pictures I have 'drawn' two possible landing areas, the longer being, it would appear quite suitable. The trees at the west end of the shorter strip posing a probable hazard. Unless of course, in light wind conditions, you land to the west and take-off to the east. An arrangement often used at private strips. If anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be much appreciated.

The shorter one is more feasible but again the ground is very uneven. The only piece of flat land is across the grass in front of the house.
