West Firle

Note: This map only gives the location of West Firle village within the UK.

WEST FIRLE: Gliding site, later paragliding and hang gliding

Location:  In and around West Firle village, which itself lies just S of the A27, about 3nm SE of Lewes

NOTES: I first came across a mention of 'Firle' in an article in the December edition of Light Aviation magazine, in which David Faulkner-Bryant was being interviewed. "In 1963 I joined the Southdown Gliding Club on the South Downs at Firle, and had my first lesson in a Slingsby T21B. The following year, after seven hours tuition, I soloed in a Slingsby Tutor."

The Southdown Gliding Club are still very much a going concern, but have been based at PULHAM for many years.

When looking around on the inter-web for more information, and a possible location, I noticed that Fly Sussex Paragliding and South Downs Hang Gliding are operating in this area.
