Whitehall Farm

WHITEHALL FARM: Temporary aerodrome

Operated by: Alan Cobham’s 1935 No.1 Tour

Location: 2nm NW of Farnborough town centre

Period of operation: 28th September 1935

NOTES: It is of course very tempting to assume that this venue was on the same site as COVE, (see seperate entry), visited the year before by the Sir Alan Cobham's Tour.

However, experience has taught me to be very wary of jumping to such easy conclusions. For example, a grass field deemed suitable one year, might well have been ploughed up and used for crops the next. It often happened, even after a 'contract' had been arranged with a farmer. There are instances of the advance party arriving for a 'Air Display' only to find the farmer had since ploughed up the field.

It appears that, generally speaking, the farmer couldn't see any problem, it was what farming was about after all, and usually another field could be used - perhaps half a mile away or more. The farmer having no conception about the advance planning involved, such as producing posters for the event.
