37 & 75 (Home Defence) Sqdns


WW2: 8th USAAF          66th Fighter Wing

55th Fighter Group   (Lockheed P.38 Lightnings)

38, 338 & 343 Sqdns   (North American P.51 Mustangs)

Note: It seems that Republic P.47 Thunderbolts also flew here.

 

Location: In WW1 the site was pretty much to the E to SE sector of the WW2 aerodrome which was W of the B1508 and Rotchfords, SW of Wormingford village, 6nm NW of Colchester

Period of operation: Military: WW1: 1916 to 1919

WW2: 1943 to 1947 (Others say 1946)

 

Gliding site: From 1990 to -

Note:  The Essex & Suffolk Gliding Club moved here from WHATFIELD (SUFFOLK) in 1990.
 

Site area: WW1: 74 acres     686 x 411
