Cumbernauld
CUMERNAULD: Regional airport?
Note: This picture (2018) was obtained from Google Earth ©
Note: Although having pretensions to being a regional 'airport', I am pretty certain this claim cannot be substantiated. I will happily be corrected, but, I am not aware of any scheduled services operating from here. And, having visited, I was not aware of any 'terminus' facilties for passenger and/or cargo handling.
I tend to get a bit 'stuffy' about the term airport being, in my opinion, far too liberally banded around in recent years. For me, the term airport (originally Air Port) only applies if scheduled services have taken place, or still are.
However, it really is a most splendid GA aerodrome, and, a credit to those operating it.
Note: This picture from a postcard was kindly sent by Mike Charlton who has an amazing collection. See, www.aviationpostcard.co.uk
The aircraft in the picture are the Piper PA-18-135 Super Cub G-BWUC owned by Mr George Cormack, and the Pilatus Britten-Norman BN2T Islander G-WOTG operated by Cormack (Aircraft Services) Ltd.
George Cormack is something of a legend at Cumbernauld. As I understand it, pretty much building the place up from its lowly beginnings. Writing this in 2017, is he still involved? Any advice will be most welcome.
